How memory works

When you exit a chat — back button, tab close, or even just walking away for a few minutes — MeMakie captures the conversation through a fast regex pass and a slower LLM pass. The fast pass lands instant facts ("Stephen has a dog named Atlas") almost immediately. The LLM pass enriches with emotional weight, relationship updates, and longer-form memories. Both feed the same per-character memory ledger.

Identity that survives signing in

MeMakie keys memories on a stable identity that survives anonymous → signed-in transitions and community-character → adopted-character transitions. So if you chat as a guest with a starter character and then sign in and adopt them, the character remembers the guest conversation as the same person.

Relationships, not just facts

Characters maintain a 7-axis relationship matrix per person they've talked to: attraction, fondness, trust, respect, irritation, jealousy, protectiveness. Treat someone well, they trust you. Cross them, they remember. Memories decay over time so old grudges fade unless you keep poking them.

How long does AI character memory last?

Memories decay slowly over time — emotional weight halves every couple of weeks of inactivity, with a floor so important moments never fully disappear.

Can I see what a character remembers about me?

Yes. Each character has a memory panel that lists the facts and moments they've captured. You can read it, prune it, or wipe it.

Do characters remember conversations with other people?

Yes. Memories are keyed per character per person, so a character's sense of you is separate from their sense of someone else.

Will deleting a chat erase the memory?

Clearing the chat transcript doesn't clear the memory. Use the memory panel to prune individual memories or the "Forget me" action to wipe the per-character ledger.
